Commonly known as an EVP, this is a sound or vocalization which is recorded with an electronic device such as a digital voice recorder, which was not vocalized by any human present during the time of the recording. This is believed to be the voice of a spirit or deceased human which is recorded. As opposed to a disembodied voice, an EVP is not audible to humans.

The subject of many hoaxes, it has been substantiated, photographed and described in detail by Benjamin Alexander, a former spiritualist, who was terrified by his experiences and later became a Christian evangelist. Ectoplasm is said to be light sensitive and vanishes in the presence of light.

An equipment anomaly involves a piece of equipment which behaves in a way which is not consistent with the designed function(s) of the device which is not considered to be possible.

A distressed vocalization is a human sounding cry, moan or groan or animal growl. The phenomenon is often associated with haunted locations where tragedies have occurred.
